Mother’s Day is just around the corner and for those who are wondering what to get the most special woman in your life, there is always that bottle of perfume or a card you can buy. But what would really make a gift more personal is if it is handmade — it shows that you have taken the time and effort to make something for your mom, thereby making her feel even more special.
Here are some quirky DIY ideas you can try to make your mom a gift that she will cherish for all time.
A jar of love There is nothing like making your mom feel special on Mother’s Day with a jar of love. To make a jar of messages, take an old mason jar (or a new one), clean it out and using glass paint, paint some interesting or funky designs on to the jar. Then, write down cute messages for her on bits of coloured paper and put it in the jar (after the paint has dried). Alternatively, if your mom has a sweet tooth, you can fill up a jar with her favourite cookies or cupcakes — maybe even chocolates or toffees. Put the lid back on, tie it all up with a pretty ribbon and gift it to her the first thing in the morning.

Happy Mothers Day 2018: Wishes, Quotes, Messages & Whatsapp Status for all MomsSpun bottle vase It is personal, it is handmade and it is sure to put a smile on your mamma's face. Take an old wine bottle and clean it out. Apply quick fix glue liberally to the neck of the bottle and then spin woolen thread evenly around the bottle. A word of advice, it would be easier to spin the bottle as you go, keeping the thread steady, so that it spreads out evenly. Repeat the same for each section of the bottle. You could even change the colour of the thread you use. After it has dried completely, drop a long-stemmed rose into the bottle and voila! A perfect DIY gift for your mom…
Message in a bottle It's old fashioned, quirky and cute. Write out a Mother’s Day message for your mom and put it in an old bottle. Gift it to her, with a breakfast in bed and watch her eyes light up in delight. To jazz things up, you could theme the breakfast in bed with a sea motif. Use blue cutlery and napkins. For extra effect, make little paper boats and place them in the breakfast tray.
Planter in jeans Reuse an old pair of jeans for this one. Fill up the legs of the jeans with pipes and thermocol. Make sure you spread a water-resistant plastic bag inside before placing a potted plant inside the waist area of the jeans. To jazz things up a bit, you could even place different kinds of plants in the pockets too!
DIY scented candle cup A scented candle cup can easily be bought off the rack at your favourite home décor store, but where’s the fun in that? Make a DIY scented candle cup instead. Take old/used scented candles and melt them in a bowl. Pour the melted wax into a clear glass cup. Don’t forget to insert a wick into the wax before you fill it up with wax!
Cheese grater earring stand There’s no denying that all moms love a little order in their lives, especially when it comes to things that are left lying around. Here is how you can help your mom organise her jewellery, especially her earrings. All you need is a steel cheese grater (available at the local department store) and some regular paint. Paint the cheese grater in colours of your choice and once the paint has dried off, use a small sharp object to remove the paint off the grater holes. Then hang the earrings off of the grater holes, and there you have it — a personalized earring stand
Carve it in soap Although it might look tough, carving soap is actually, quite simple. Pick a design — it can be anything from a simple flower, your mom’s initials, or if you have the skill for it, a portrait of your mom and you. Pick a light-coloured soap and sketch the design you want to carve on to it. You could use a stencil or tracing paper to get an even finish. Then, using a carving tool, start carving away the area around the design you sketched.
